Marty, Paul, Shred Ned, Mark and Hodgy escape north to be welcomed by the Telo community with open arms.

Words and pics | Uncle Lip

The Group:

Our first mixed group of the year came together as one and enjoyed every second onboard The Mighty Mango - two best mates, Paul the oldest youngest grom, Marty who heard about “The Mango” 25 years ago and dreamed of doing a trip and Shred Ned.

Conditions/Forecast

It’s that time of year we like to escape the trade winds and head north where the winds are guaranteed to be lighter. Not much swell on the horizon this trip but when we saw a bump on the forecast we made sure we were in the right spot.

Standout Sessions:

With the plan to only experience Telo and venture through Hinako, onto Nias and back, we ended up further north by surprise.

I’m sure you have all heard the news of the missing people between Nias and Banyak Islands right? With the 3 missing Indonesian crew and 4 Australian guests?

We lifted anchor and set sail overnight to join the search party from Telo. By the time we got right up north, 6 out of the 7 people that were missing had been found. We did everything we could to help and continue searching for the one Indonesian crew that was still missing.

We were juggling a bit, between getting our guests some waves and doing everything we could for the local community.

Karma prevailed and we found ourselves solo on one of Indonesia’s prestigious right-handers by ourselves. Karma is real people.

Wave of the trip:

A lot of personal best waves were ridden this trip and as the camera was taking a break Liam “Hoggy” Hodge rode his best wave ever on a shortboard. Liam has only been surfing for 8 months so it was epic to experience his froth!

Personalities:

With a mixed group and a mixed bag of guests, it was cool to see them all come together as one. The two groms, who had never experienced anything like what we offer on The Mighty Mango, enjoyed every moment and everyone they met on our journey. Paul the world's oldest grom bringing energy to the table and out surfing everyone onboard.

It was epic to see quiet Marty come alive and really enjoy his trip of a lifetime he’s been dreaming of for 25 years, and Shred Ned who found love in the tropics…hahahaha. We will leave that one for a story on the aft deck…

Food:

Anyone who’s ever stepped onboard knows that chef Situ and Putra don’t stop putting delicious food on the table, meal after meal. The meal that had the guests talking this trip was new to the menu “Spaghetti Agile Olio” with a Japanese touch. The spices and texture had the guest's taste buds tingling.

“Wow you're on the Mango, you’re guaranteed a good time”

Random dude at the pub before departure.

Special Thanks:

A massive shout out to Grant Richards who took control and led the search party. The Banyaks community searched day and night for the survivors. Matt and Wal who gave us the green light to join the search party. Telo RSL for putting on the footy one afternoon. Resort Latitude Zero for the Mango Daiquiris and giving our Foxy Lady a new lick of paint. Dylan “Dingo” Russell for putting on a belter at Telo Island Ranch. And as always, the best crew in the world - Mango’s.

Yours truly Uncle Lip
